FAQs

  • The underwater sculptures at John Brewer Reef are public art and can be freely accessed by recreational visitors to the Marine Park. However, if tourists would like to visit the John Brewer Reef sites by vessel and have the guidance of an expert guide, there are several commercial tourism opportunities available.

  • Absolutely! Scuba diving and snorkelling are highly encouraged at the sculpture sites. They offer an excellent opportunity to witness the underwater sculptures and explore the surrounding reefs. The sites are designed to accommodate both snorkelling and scuba diving enthusiasts, with shallow water areas (4-6m) specifically intended for snorkelling and deeper sections (12-18m) suitable for scuba diving.

  • To ensure the preservation and respect for the underwater sculptures, we advocate a no touching policy, similar to coral reefs. We aim to promote Responsible Reef Practices and will provide interpretive manuals, training, websites, and brochures to educate visitors about the importance of not touching the artworks. Over time, the sculptures will naturally accumulate marine life as corals and other organisms attach to them. This process not only adds to their visual appeal but also integrates them ecologically into the local environment, making them even more fascinating for visitors to observe.

MOUA Operators

MOUA has partnered with a select group of tour operators who share our commitment to responsible exploration and preservation of the underwater world. The following companies have been carefully chosen for their expertise in marine conservation, their dedication to sustainable practices, and their ability to provide visitors with unforgettable experiences while ensuring the protection of the delicate ecosystems we showcase.

Master Reef Guides

Master Reef Guides trained by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority are striving to be the world’s leading reef guides and interpreters sharing the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. As official reef ambassadors they have the most up-to-date scientific and management information about the reef and can explain what people can do to make a difference.

Marine Scientists

If you are looking for something special and would like to experience MOUA and John Brewer Reef together with a trained marine scientist to learn more about the reef and maybe even do a bit of citizen science for the day then please ask any of our approved operators to request a marine scientist for your trip from our official research partner ReefEcologic.

MOUA MOORINGS

If you have your own vessel to take you and your guests out to John Brewer Reef, we offer you the unique opportunity to experience the Coral Greenhouse and the Ocean Sentinels in a private setting.

There are three different types of moorings at the MOUA site on John Brewer Reef (please see moorings map below for details on the location of each):

  • One white private fore/aft mooring suitable for vessels over 24m in length (or smaller) directly above the MOUA site that can be booked below for any day from either 9.30am to 3.30pm or 3.30pm to 9.30am the next day.

  • One white private swing mooring suitable for vessels up to 24m in length very close to the MOUA site that can be booked below for any day from either 9.30am to 3.30pm or 3.30pm to 9.30am the next day. Please note: If the fore/aft mooring is occupied by a larger vessel and the conditions (i.e. wind, current) do not permit you to use the swing mooring at the same time then the vessel on the fore/aft mooring has priority and you will either have to wait or use one of the public moorings further away. If this unlikely case happens, please note down the exact time and conditions, take a photo of the other vessel and email everything to MOUA to request a full refund.

  • Two blue public moorings suitable for vessels up to 24m in length further away from the MOUA site that are free of charge but cannot be booked and are allocated on a first come first serve basis.

Please do NOT use the white private moorings without a confirmed booking as in that case anyone can book them at any time during your stay and you will be asked to vacate them immediately. This also applies to dinghies if you are using the blue public moorings further away from the MOUA site.

If you need scuba diving equipment, tank refills or anything else, please feel free to contact any of our MOUA operators above directly, they are usually open to arrange to meet you at John Brewer Reef for a fee.

If you are a traditional owner or citizen science group planning to run a project at MOUA please contact us at team (at) moua.com.au for a discount.
