Ocean Sentinel
Dr. Richard Braley, also known as 'The Giant Clam Man', has dedicated his life's work to studying giant clams. Inspired by a memorable encounter with a giant clam in Ha'apai, central Tonga, over four decades ago, Dr. Braley made Magnetic Island his home and conducted extensive research on the Great Barrier Reef. As the reef boasts the highest density population of giant clams worldwide, it provided an ideal location for his work. In 1998, Dr. Braley established the Aquasearch Aquarium on Magnetic Island.
Artist Jason deCaires Taylor aptly chose to merge Dr. Braley's image with that of a giant clam for his Ocean Sentinel sculpture, utilising the clam's decorative shell as the base for the artwork.
