Unlocking Regional Potential: MOUA and STEM Changemakers Launch $2M Partnership

We are thrilled to announce a transformative five-year partnership between the Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA) and STEM Changemakers, catalyzed by a prestigious $2 million grant from the Australian Government's Department of Industry, Science and Resources. This powerful collaboration will merge world-class marine science, public art, and targeted education to deliver a STEM program at an unprecedented scale, directly addressing the critical skills shortfall in regional Australia.

Operating at the intersection of science, technology, and art from its home in Townsville, MOUA offers an extraordinary, inspirational platform to translate complex marine science into highly engaging, real-world learning experiences. Over the next five years, this initiative will directly reach 4,800 young girls (ages 12–18) and their families across regional Queensland. By using MOUA's unique underwater installations—such as the Ocean Sentinels at John Brewer Reef, as authentic industry problem-solving canvases, the program will foster STEM aspiration, lift student confidence, and open vibrant new career pathways.

Why This Partnership Matters

Australia’s economic and environmental future relies heavily on STEM-driven solutions for net-zero targets, environmental protection, and regional resilience. However, current participation rates fall short of projected demand, with the gap being most acute in the very regional areas tasked with delivering these national priorities. Regional young people represent an incredible, untapped resource. By combining STEM Changemakers’ proven, community-led educational model, which historically boosted girls' intent to pursue STEM fields from 39% to 88% during pilot programs, with MOUA’s massive global reach and conservation platform, this launch is set to drive lasting, generational change.

Through deep mentorship with dedicated STEM experts, teachers, and early-career researchers, regional girls will transition from being statistically the least likely to choose science and technology pathways to becoming the ultimate innovators and leaders of their own communities. Together, MOUA and STEM Changemakers are dismantling traditional barriers, opening doors, and generating more than 24,000 distinct STEM engagements to secure a brighter, more equitable future for regional Queensland.
